What it is in one line
ByteDance's AI image and video creation platform, built by the Jianying (CapCut) team on self-developed Seedance video and Seedream image models, positioned as "a camera for the world of imagination." It is the #1 Chinese app in the AI video generation lane — but its real moat is the Douyin relationship: works become content, and content becomes acquisition.
Who built it
ByteDance, launched by the Jianying team in May 2024. Underneath are self-developed models: Seedance for video, Seedream for images. Seedance 2.0 arrived in February 2026 with mixed four-modality input (image, video, audio, text), referencing up to 9 images, 3 videos, and 3 audio clips, generating up to 15 seconds of video with synchronized sound and multi-shot narrative. In April 2026 it shipped a collaborative AI narrative tool, "Little Octopus", with a "Vibe Create" mode where AI acts as a creative partner across the whole flow from story outline to finished film.
Read: ByteDance's approach to creation tools runs on two legs — model iteration plus Douyin distribution. The model runs on self-developed Seedance (cost-controlled, fast iteration), and distribution docks directly onto Douyin. That is a combination no independent creation tool can replicate.
What it actually does
- Text-to-image / text-to-video → Seedream 5.0 Lite does 2K/4K output, live web retrieval, and instruction-precise editing; Seedance 2.0 handles multimodal-reference generation
- Image-to-video / smart canvas → static images become dynamic video; canvas mode supports multi-asset composition
- AI narrative creation (Little Octopus) → the April 2026 collaborative tool where AI spans story outline to finished film, with Vibe Create lowering the narrative barrier
- Community and templates → a works community plus template reuse, with creator output flowing directly into the Douyin ecosystem
- Douyin "AI Creation Wave" program → platform-side traffic support and incentives for creators
What old behavior it replaces
Making an e-commerce hero image or a short video used to mean: if you knew Photoshop/Canva, you did it yourself; if not, you outsourced — a 15-second video costing hundreds to thousands of yuan, with a days-long cycle. An ordinary person with an idea had no tool, only the option of giving up.
Jimeng replaces that high-barrier path of "pro design tools + outsourced production" — it folds image and video production into one app where text or reference images produce assets directly. For creators it also replaces the "where does my work go" question: output docks natively with Douyin, so the work is content, and content is traffic.
Read: for independent tool founders this is not a lane you can compete in head-on — the distribution channel is in the opponent's hands, so is model iteration, so is the community where works accumulate. Jimeng is worth studying, but study it as "how a giant with distribution builds creation tools," not "I should build one too."
Business model
Free quota plus paid generation (compute consumption) for consumers, with indirect monetization through the Douyin ecosystem (creator economy, advertising). A CMB International / Artificial Analysis report puts Seedance 2.0 720p among the best price-performance text-to-video models. One estimate puts the cost of a 15-second video at roughly 5.2 yuan early on, rising to about 40.2 yuan — prices are rising because demand is rising.
Hard numbers
- traffic board: 87.36M MAU, -3.33% MoM (June 2026); #7 on the China app board, #1 in the domestic AI video lane
- Conflicting data scopes: QuestMobile reports Jimeng app MAU of 13.525M for March 2026; another report cites ~79.94M for January 2026. Nearly a 6x gap between scopes; traffic board's 87.36M is closer to the latter. The exact scope (whether web/Douyin ecosystem entries are included) is uncertain
- Seedance 2.0 is ranked alongside Alibaba's HappyHorse-1.0 and Kuaishou's Kling 3.0 in the first tier of text-to-video (Artificial Analysis / CMB International, July 2026)
- ByteDance has not disclosed independent financials for Jimeng
Four-way read
| Dimension |
Call |
| Founder-product fit |
N/A: a giant's product, but the Jianying team building creation tools is a strong match — tool, community, and template mindshare are already established |
| Product insight |
Upper-middle: tool + community + Douyin distribution as a trinity; Little Octopus is the attempt to reach toward "narrative," the higher bar |
| Execution quality |
High: self-developed models in the first tier, Seedance 2.0 in the best price-performance quadrant |

Strong: Douyin ecosystem and model generation both lead; the head-on space left for independent rivals is very small |
The call
Jimeng is the settled leader of China's AI video lane with real data — but read it together with the data scopes.
At 87.36M MAU with -3.33% MoM, the dip itself is unsurprising — June sits in the post-618 content-demand trough, and a head product moving slightly is not a collapse. The real observation is the magnitude gap with Kling (8.11M): one rides the Douyin ecosystem, the other Kuaishou's, ten times apart in MAU. That says in video generation, "generation quality" sets the ceiling, but "distribution exit" decides the actual scale.
The data scope needs its own paragraph: QuestMobile's 13.5M and traffic board's 87.36M differ by nearly 6x. That is a statistical-scope difference, not fabrication. Confirm each number's scope before putting it in a judgment — cross-scope comparisons yield completely wrong conclusions.
Read: the most transferable lesson for the reader — if you build a content-creation product, the work needs an existing distribution exit, or no matter how strong the tool, the work rots in users' phones. Jimeng welds "generation" and "publishing" together; that structural reason is behind its 10x MAU over Kling, and it is the life-or-death question for every independent creation tool.
What to watch next
① Whether July MoM turns positive — was June's dip seasonal or competitive (Kling 3.0, HappyHorse at the same tier)? The next month's number answers it
② Whether Little Octopus produces publicly visible narrative works — it decides whether Jimeng moves from "generation tool" up to "creation platform"
③ Whether the company discloses a unified MAU scope — with 13.5M vs 87.36M unresolved, every cross-product comparison stays unreliable
What you can take from it
Product logic: the most effective growth move for a creation tool is welding "generation" to "publishing" — Jimeng's works go natively to Douyin, so works are content and content is acquisition. Without a big platform, a smaller version: build one-click publishing to mainstream platforms plus trending templates, and let the works speak for the product instead of paid acquisition.
Pricing structure: free quota plus per-generation payment is the standard structure with average reference value; the real difference is that ecosystem subsidies push per-unit cost extremely low, which independent products cannot replicate — don't force it.
Verdict
Worth watching. Category leader, real data, leading on both model and ecosystem — the standard answer to "how a giant with distribution builds creation tools." The slight MoM dip is most likely seasonal, but cross-product comparison only becomes meaningful once a unified scope is confirmed. For independent founders it is a benchmark: without a distribution exit, a creation tool's ceiling sits right there.
